WOW!
What an awesome Jackstock!!
I got a lot of carving done and enjoyed the company of many good friends. I was able to see
quite a bit of Oregon including the Pacific coast and a variety of wildlife (deer, elk, osprey,
beavers, hawks, quail, and scrub jays, etc) along with some ‘not quite so wild’ life (chickens).
Byron and Anne were excellent hosts and provided us with a good variety of tasty foods, going
out of their way to accommodate my ‘special needs’ eating. I’m pretty sure I would never have tried
a yellow watermelon, which was very good, by the way, if they hadn’t included it in the menu.
Their large umbrella and great, thick hawthorn tree provided us with plenty of shade for the sunny
days and we moved into the shop when it rained.
I even had an opportunity to practice my pitching (with green apples) when the neighboring chickens
got too close to Anne’s flower garden. {No animals were injured in this activity but some feathers
were ruffled - human and bird.}
Besides the beaches of the pacific ocean, we visited the South Beach aquarium where I found my
souvenir t-shirt and Trader Joe’s where I found many items to add to my collection of artifacts I use
for teaching Indian lore to children. We also visited the Salem and the Albany carousels. Salem’s
is completed and we all took a ride, compliments of Dave. Oh, yeah, I also picked up another souvenir
t-shirt in Albany, honoring the bear Cliff is working on. Sure is a good thing that suitcase zipped
open another couple of inches.
All I can say about this year’s Jackstock is - if you missed it, you missed a heckuva lot!
Thank you, Byron and Anne.

Well, this was my seventh Jackstock!!! And it was all I expected it to be. Great company, great food,
lots of carving, lots of laughing and lots of fun.
Jackstocks provide not only a chance to get together with good friends who share a common interest, but
it is also an opportunity to get to know the families of our friends. We spend so much time talking with
them online, hearing about daughters, sons, grandchildren.....but getting to meet them all "up front and
personal" is just wonderful. Byron and Anne, you have a lovely family. The little ones are all adorable,
bright and friendly kids, and Laura....well, we were all so impressed with her. She's very special, and I
can see why you are so proud of her, and of all of your family.
Jackstock is also a great excuse to travel and see parts of the country I probably wouldn't get to otherwise.
I can see why you Oregonians are so proud of your state. It's beautiful. (but the ocean is on the wrong side!)
:)
After living the carving and construction of the Salem Riverfront Carousel through Cliff for so long, I
finally got to see it!! What an experience to actually ride on it (thanks, Dave!). Kate and I sat in the stage coach :)
Our side trip to the Albany Carousel studio was also exciting. In my own little way I hope to be a part
of that awesome project. And.....:)...the puffins at the Aquarium!!! They were too much fun to watch. I
think I took 2 whole cards of pictures of them! :)
The whole Jackstock experience was, once again, an incredibly, fun time. We missed all of you who couldn't
make it, and hope to see EVERYONE next year.
Thank you, Byron and Anne! Your hard work and hospitality are appreciated.
